I began my library career in UK academic libraries and then moved on to JISC project work. After a stint with a library software company I co-founded Critical Eye Communications (CEC), to offer consultancy services in all areas related to the digital library environment and create and deliver bespoke training. CEC has a strong emphasis on using new technologies in a practical way. I also do some research with UKOLN at the University of Bath.
Through a varied career, I've been lucky enough to work on projects in the UK, the USA and Europe in public, health, academic, commercial and government libraries. I set great value by being able to transfer experiences between sectors, and many events I am involved in look to facilitate cross-sectoral communications.
My professional interests include interlending, resource sharing and document delivery, the creation and development of portals, management of e-resources and 'hybrid' library resources and repositories. I go where others fear to tread by liking to work with and train people in electronic copyright and metadata. I am drawn to all new technologies and like to seek out their practical application - or not - in the workplace.
I also have a growing interest in the design of physical library space, possibly as a result of spending so much time in a virtual, online environment!
I am mostly practical in my professional approach. And I need a ready supply of good quality, real-leaf tea when working.
I like taking photos but dislike being photographed. A few photos of me will be inevitable, but I prefer to allow one of my salukis, Kizzie, to be my avatar. She loves the camera and the camera loves her right back. I mostly take photos of salukis and of library interiors that interest me. And maybe one day an enlightened library will invite Kizzie inside to pose for the camera- who knows?
I am entirely frivolous in my personal time. Ask my two salukis and one saluki-greyhound. They'll tell you.
